About this book

A young red deer opens his eyes to a world of fern beds, peat streams and heather on Exmoor. His mother teaches him to keep still while she feeds, then leads him farther across the moor as his legs grow stronger. J. W. Fortescue gives the calf's first encounters a child's sense of discovery, from his reflection in a pool to the trout that suddenly breaks its surface.

This children's animal story combines close attention to the countryside with conversations among its creatures. A snipe and a duck help the Hind learn about the land beyond the hills, where wooded valleys offer shelter and food. Wind, mist and running water also have voices.
