About this book

A small hoofprint beside a spring sets Yan searching the Sandhill wilderness near Carberry, Manitoba. Still in his teens and inexperienced as a hunter, he follows deer tracks through snow, woods and sandy hills, learning to read direction and distance from marks on the ground. Ernest Thompson Seton gives this animal story for young readers a close view of both the pursuit and the deer themselves, whose effortless leaps leave Yan watching in wonder.

Reports of an unusually large stag keep drawing him back to the hills. Encounters with Chaska and expeditions with other hunters bring weather, practical knowledge and differences in patience into the story. Alongside the excitement of tracking runs a tension between the wish to claim a prize and admiration for a living creature. The detailed landscape and attention to animal movement make the book appealing to readers interested in outdoor fiction and observation of wildlife.
