The Story of a Tinder-box is a course of lectures delivered before a Juvenile Auditory at the London Institution during the Christmas Holidays of 1888-89 by the late Charles Meymott Tidy. The preface says the lectures were delivered with the assistance merely of a few notes. Charles Meymott Tidy speaks of ancient Rome and a special order, called the order of the Vestal Virgins, whose duty it was to preserve the sacred fire, which if once extinguished, it was thought would bring ruin and destruction upon their city.
The text mentions Prometheus, who stole fire from heaven, bringing it to earth in a copper rod, which combined act of theft and scientific experiment made the gods very angry. The text states that friction produces heat and shows a little toy cracker that the young listeners may have seen before. The text says the bather knows perfectly well that a rough sea is warmer than a smooth sea, because the mechanical dash of the waves has been converted into heat.
