About this book

Experimental Mechanics, by Sir Robert Stawell Ball, presents a revised course of lectures delivered at the Royal College of Science at Dublin. The preface identifies the original audience as a large evening class consisting chiefly of artisans, and describes the volume as a revised edition of those lectures. An experiment with a truck, cord and pulley examines the force needed to draw the truck along a horizontal plane and counterbalance friction.

The discussion of pendulums describes edges supported upon agate plates in some instruments requiring extreme delicacy, while small steel pieces suffice for the stated purpose. The treatment of mechanical power considers practical demands such as lifting a weighty anchor from the sea and rolling, cutting or punching an iron plate.
