About this book
The foreword presents a record of life in Cooperstown from the earliest times, with people and events selected for their story-interest rather than comprehensive historical coverage. The discussion of early inhabitants begins by assuming an Indian village on the present site of Cooperstown before the coming of the white man. The discussion says most relics found in the region belong to the Algonquin type, while Otsego is an Iroquois word.
Isaac Cooper took possession of Edgewater as his residence on December 4, 1813, after marrying Mary Ann, daughter of General Jacob Morris. The diary entry expresses a hope that the house and lot will descend to children and grandchildren who increase in virtue and respectability. Miss Cooper describes her eyesight by saying that the blue sky has shrunk in her vision to the size of a bachelor's-button.
