About this book
Joel Munsell's reference book, from New York in 1858, aims to bring together the great events of each day of the year, in all ages, as far as their dates can be ascertained. The title page says it embraces anniversaries of memorable persons and events from the creation to the present time. The contents run through the months from January to December, followed by an index to names of persons, an index to battles, sieges and other military operations, and a general index.
Entries are short and led by the year. Examples include Charles IV proclaimed king of Spain in 1789, a lunar rainbow seen for an hour at Wakefield in Yorkshire in 1806, masquerades and masked balls prohibited in Philadelphia in 1810, and the expedition under M. de la Salle setting out from Rochelle with thirty men in 1678. Index entries list places such as Rheims, Rivoli and Rome with page numbers.
