About this book

The approaching solar eclipse of May 28, 1900 gives George F. Chambers a practical starting point for explaining shadows in the sky. Written for general readers in 1899, this handbook begins with the movement and alignment of the Sun, Earth and Moon. Its contents extend from the recurring pattern of eclipses to the corona, shadow bands and changes observed as totality approaches. Lunar eclipses, transits and occultations also have their place.

Historical records provide another way into the subject. Chambers compares old descriptions of darkened skies with astronomical calculations, weighing possible dates and locations against the words of earlier observers. Chapters address eclipse customs, references in poetry and the use of the electric telegraph. An appendix supplies travel information for visitors to Spain and Portugal. Today the book offers a view of how popular astronomy combined explanation, historical inquiry and preparations for a public observing event.
