About this book

Dark patches in the Milky Way provide Garrett Putman Serviss with an opening into the puzzles of astronomy. In this 1909 popular science book, he describes star clouds and clusters, changing constellations, nebulae, comets, meteorites and the surfaces of the Moon and Mars. His aim is to make difficult subjects understandable while preserving their scale and their hold on the imagination. The opening chapter connects telescope observations with the impressions these dark regions made on sailors in southern waters.

Later discussion turns to sunspots, the solar corona and the relationship between solar activity and Earth's magnetic condition. Serviss distinguishes observations from unsettled explanations, then considers broader possibilities about the Sun's changing energy. Read today, the book offers a view of the questions and explanatory habits of early twentieth-century astronomy, alongside a vivid account of looking closely at the sky.
