About this book

The Story of Lutheran Missions is a book by Elsie Singmaster. The foreword says there has been for many years both a need and a call for a book on Lutheran missions that could be used as a text book and also as a book of reference. Though five ports had been opened by the treaty of Nanking, foreigners were not allowed to go far beyond them, and to meet this difficulty Gützlaff began the training of bands of native workers who should carry the Gospel to the most distant of the eighteen provinces.

In 1850 Gützlaff returned to China, and the bands of native workers he had trained had not lived up to his high hopes but had basely betrayed him. Karl Ewald Rhenius, a German Lutheran in the service of the English mission, began at Palmacotta, the chief city of the Tinnevelli district, an original work, the founding of Christian villages. Krapf, who agreed to go, says of the new station that the station Ribe will in due time celebrate the triumph of the mission in the conversion of the Wanika, though he may be in the grave.
