About this book

Long before rails crossed the continent, proposals for a route to the Pacific brought together explorers, engineers and advocates with very different plans. William Francis Bailey traces those proposals in this 1906 history, beginning with Thomas Jefferson, the Lewis and Clark expedition and early suggestions for steam transport. His account treats the railroad as an achievement that deserved a larger place in American historical education.

The chapters move through congressional action, finance, construction and the people responsible for the line. Portraits of John A. Dix, Thomas C. Durant and Granville M. Dodge connect public confidence, management and engineering to the work itself. Separate sections cover the Kansas Pacific, Denver Pacific and Central Pacific railroads, while an appendix supplies officials, statistics and a survey report. Readers interested in railway history can follow both the practical organization of the project and the patriotic outlook through which Bailey explains it.
