About this book
Chapters on the History of the Southern Pacific is a work by Stuart Daggett. The preface says that, so far as the author knows, no published study discusses in detail the important business problems connected with the railroad lines' history. The preface observes that most books referring to the Southern Pacific or Central Pacific limit themselves to a few chapters on the romantic aspects of construction.
The account of freight complaints reports that inhabitants of Los Angeles considered their northbound rates to the San Joaquin Valley relatively higher than rates southward from San Francisco. A dealer in San Bernardino protests against paying a higher rate from eastern points than the rate charged to Los Angeles.
