About this book

At a German boarding house, the dinner table becomes a stage for arguments about food, health, marriage and national pride. Katherine Mansfield's 1911 collection follows conversations in which fellow guests turn an English narrator into a representative of her country. Their confident advice and personal questions give ordinary meals an uncomfortable edge. In another opening scene, the guests treat a reserved baron with elaborate respect, revealing how readily rank shapes their manners.

These short stories draw attention to the small gestures that expose self-importance: a napkin tucked into a collar, a carefully delivered postcard, an objection to warming a teapot. The middle excerpt moves from bathers discussing cures to Andreas Binzer's irritated morning thoughts about his home and servant.
