The Swedish Revolution Under Gustavus Vasa is by Paul Barron Watson. The preface says that no name in history lies deeper in Swedish hearts than the name Gustavus Vasa, Liberator of Sweden from the yoke of Denmark. The preface says that the Swedish people had long been groaning under a foreign despotism when Gustavus came upon the stage.
A law, the text says, exempted all mounted courtiers from crown taxation, and was the foundation of the nobility of Sweden. The text says the knights were the mounted warriors of the king, while the poorer landowners and the class of tenants bore the whole burden of taxation. A speaker pleading for the Church says that the king protests that his whole heart is in her preservation, and gives as the king's excuse for exacting tribute from the churches to aid the kingdom that he undertook the war as much for the freedom of the Church as for the safety of the kingdom.
