About this book
Hero Tales of the Far North by Jacob A. Riis includes an account headed Hans Egede, the Apostle to Greenland, connecting an explorer's name with a vessel. The opening account recalls reports that the North Pole had been reached and describes Dr. Cook coming to Copenhagen aboard the Danish Government steamer Hans Egede. The account describes plans for trading and preaching to proceed together, followed by the building of a bigger house and the naming of the colony Godthaab, or Good Hope.
Egede describes winter conditions in which hot water froze as it ran across a table and cooked meat was often frozen at the bone when served. An account of King Christian describes a ruler well up in his sixties, worn by the activities of a long reign, who puts heart into his people by personal example.
