About this book

Henry James's novel "The Sweetheart of M. Briseux" narrates the tale of a woman who is the focus of the stunning piece "The Lady with a Yellow Shawl," created by the most well-known local artist Briseux. The novel examines the relationship between M. Briseux, an unsuccessful and impoverished man with artistic understanding and competence, and Harold Staines, a gorgeous and wealthy man devoid of artistic talent. As Briseux completes a portrait that Harold began, the tale is revealed. The image is displayed at the Paris salon and is recognized as a masterpiece. The book is a contemplation on the romantic, traditional understanding of art, artists, and art itself.
