About this book
A studio conversation gives Nick Dormer's ambitions a precise shape: he wants to spend his life painting portraits, yet his parliamentary seat ties him to politics. His friend Nash presses him to take artistic work seriously, and their argument stretches from the promise of his pictures to the meaning of a useful career. Henry James turns this conflict into a novel about artists, theatrical life and the social demands surrounding personal choices.
The author's preface explains his interest in the price of an artistic life and in London's fascination with performers. In the main narrative, that broad concern becomes intimate through Nick's account of the peace and satisfaction he expects from painting. Readers interested in conversations about vocation, public standing and private happiness will find those concerns worked through in closely observed speech, hesitation and competing judgments.
