About this book
The Symbolism of Churches and Church Ornaments presents a translation of the first book of the Rationale Divinorum Officiorum, accompanied by an introductory essay and notes. The discussion of church architecture argues that, if religion enters very largely into its principles, a religious ethos is essential to a church architect.
The account of sacred representations says that the figure is sometimes surrounded by seven serving angels, each portrayed with six wings according to the vision of Isaiah. The explanation of the sub-deacon's return after the Gospel reading presents the sub-deacon as now sufficiently instructed and interprets the gospel carried in his hand as the fruit of his ministrations.
