About this book
The Tables of the Law; & The Adoration of the Magi is by W. B. Yeats. The contents list The Tables of the Law, in parts I and II, and The Adoration of the Magi. The narrator asks a man named Aherne why he refused the berretta, and almost at the last moment, recalling that when they lived together he had thoughts for nothing but theology and mysticism.
The narrator says that he and another man had been students in Paris and belonged to a little group which devoted itself to speculations about alchemy and mysticism. The narrator reads small writing on ivory tablets, which he finds is in Latin and is an elaborate casuistry, illustrated with many examples. One of the old men speaks in French to the woman who was still bending over the bed, saying there must have been yet one name, for she murmured a name while the spirit was going out of the body.
