About this book

A syrup can nailed to a cherry tree offers Rusty Wren and his wife just the home they need. Near Farmer Green's window in Pleasant Valley, the little birds build a nest while Johnnie Green watches with delight. Their songs repay the family's kindness, although Rusty's early morning music is less welcome to a sleepy boy. Arthur Scott Bailey turns the business of nesting into a children's story full of conversations, small disagreements and household concerns.

Life becomes harder when Jasper Jay frightens the family by dropping cherries on their roof. With his wife needing rest and six young birds demanding food, Rusty must work from dawn to dark and starts thinking about a helper. The short chapters bring bird behavior together with familiar worries about work, neighbors and caring for children. Readers can enjoy the comic scale of these troubles and the farmyard setting that gives them shape.
