About this book

On Farmer Green's farm, a splendid tail gives Turkey Proudfoot a very high opinion of himself. The hens admire his feathers, but his other neighbors find him noisy, touchy and far too ready to fight. He even takes offense at the six geese going swimming, though their visits to the pond have nothing to do with him. Arthur Scott Bailey turns this meddling gobbler into the center of a children's tale about vanity and everyday manners.

Conversations carry much of the comedy, especially when the rooster tries to agree with Proudfoot and still manages to annoy him. Later, news of Johnnie Green's new pet brings a different threat to his importance: a peacock with a tail the farmyard cannot stop admiring. Brief chapters and familiar animal characters make the story suitable for reading aloud, with pride and jealousy expressed through squabbles that children can readily recognize.
