About this book
The volume is headed History of the Thirty Years' War in Germany, Book V. The text says that Wallenstein's death rendered necessary the appointment of a new generalissimo, and that the Emperor yielded at last to the advice of the Spaniards to raise his son Ferdinand, King of Hungary, to that dignity. The text says that under Ferdinand, King of Hungary, Count Gallas commanded and performed the functions of commander-in-chief, while the prince brought to this post nothing but his name and dignity.
The text says the consequences of a disaster were terrible, and that a dangerous division threatened the Protestant Confederation with ruin. The text says that all looked to Oxenstiern for counsel and assistance, and that Oxenstiern applied for both to the German States. The text names Amelia, who had, with the approbation of the Estates, assumed the government after the death of her husband.
