About this book

The Three Cities Trilogy: Lourdes, Volume 3 is by Emile Zola, translated by Ernest A. Vizetelly. M. de Guersaint is already up and dressed at seven o'clock on a fine, bright, warm August Sunday morning, in one of two little rooms on the third floor of the Hotel of the Apparitions.

The adjoining room is occupied by Pierre, the young priest, who had not returned to the hotel until past one in the morning. M. de Guersaint rises to his feet on seeing specks of light shine out above the gradient ways on the left side of the Basilica, and says “At last! Here they come!” Father Sempe seems with his customary humility to have bowed to the inevitable and accepted this vexatious competition, even allowing a collection-box for the building of the new parish church to be placed inside the Basilica.

Émile Zola

Émile Zola (1840-1902) was a French novelist and the leading figure of literary naturalism. His twenty-volume Rougon-Macquart cycle traced one family under the Second Empire, and his open letter J'accuse in defense of Alfred Dreyfus reshaped the writer's role in public life.
