About this book

The Brotherhood of Consolation is by Honoré de Balzac. The contents are grouped as First Episode, Madame de la Chanterie, and Second Episode, The Initiate. Godefroid, who is in debt, resolves as a first test to live in some retired place and pay his debts from his income.

A small lodging for seventy francs a month, suitable for an ecclesiastic, is advertised with board supplied, and inquiries go to M. Millet, grocer, rue Chanoinesse, near Notre-Dame. A speaker named Alain says that Madame's name is Lechantre de la Chanterie, and that under the Empire none of the nobiliary titles were allowed. A young baron takes a cab to the sheriff’s office, where he pays his grandfather’s debt and receives the papers and a receipted bill of costs.
