About this book

A stone carving of a damaged Bible in an English churchyard introduces Hubert Goodwin's story. Raised in the northern village of Hulney by affectionate Christian parents, Hubert has a quick temper and resists their guidance. His wish to become a soldier takes him to military school and then to a cadetship with the East India Company. In the autumn of 1792, he leaves home for a ship bound from Portsmouth to India, eager for the life ahead.

Alice Somerton writes for young readers about faith, conduct and repentance. Later passages find Hubert weakened by illness and preparing to return to England. Parting from a doctor who has become his friend brings loneliness and resentment, until a remembered biblical promise offers comfort. The story joins a soldier's travels with direct moral teaching, giving readers an example of how family advice and religious belief can shape a young person's choices.
