About this book

Smoky gardens and rattling traffic surround Marco Loristan's new lodgings in London. After hurried travel from Russia, the boy of about twelve has arrived with his father and their soldier servant, Lazarus. Marco keeps promises of silence about their affairs, while his father teaches him the maps and history of Samavia. Their shabby surroundings contrast with the respect his father receives and the importance Marco attaches to serving their country.

In Frances Hodgson Burnett's children's adventure, preparation for a secret task also becomes a test of friendship. The Rat copies a road map and asks Loristan to trust him as Marco's companion. He takes pride in his training with crutches and hopes to show that he can be relied upon. The novel gives readers an adventure built around practical learning, loyalty and the desire to earn responsibility, with the boys' planning bringing a sense of purpose to their uncertain lives.
