About this book

Frank and Joe Hardy set out along the Shore Road to visit the new airport near Bayport, eager to see airplanes and meet a pilot. Their afternoon changes when a plane swoops dangerously close to their roadster. The brothers rush to help the trapped pilot after the crash, only to face his angry claim that they caused the accident. His drinking adds an uneasy edge to their first encounter with the flying field.

This detective adventure also follows the boys as they investigate stolen mail sacks. Giles Ducroy, a former pilot they suspect, has an alibi, so Frank and Joe test possible explanations and search a cabin at Beach Grove for clues. A few cigarette ends and a discarded packet become objects worth examining. The story combines the excitement of commercial flying with the practical work of noticing small details, comparing accounts, and questioning an apparently convincing explanation.
