About this book
A rainy morning in a worn castle in the Sierra Morena introduces Juan and Carlos, two brothers growing up in sixteenth-century Spain. Juan leads their games with impatient confidence, while Carlos brings a thoughtful temperament and a ready supply of proverbs. A fencing accident turns play into a quarrel, followed by reconciliation. Their shared fascination with their father adds another layer to the hopes they build around their family.
Deborah Alcock places this relationship within a historical novel about the Spanish Reformation and the Inquisition. In a later scene, Carlos urges his cousin Gonsalvo away from revenge, then offers comfort when sudden illness strikes. The arrival of officers of the Holy Office brings danger into the room. Written for young readers, the story connects family affection with religious conviction and difficult choices, giving its historical conflicts a personal focus.
