About this book
Pasquale Villari's study, translated by Linda Villari, carries the subtitle The Republic and Parties at the Time of Dante. The edition sampled is the fourth impression, illustrated, dated London, 1908, with an illustration of the Mercato Vecchio before its demolition.
The pages sampled go back to the rule of the Ostrogoths in Italy, given as 493 to 552, followed by the Greeks, who held it until 568, and the Longobards, who became masters of three-fourths of Italy. Florentine trade also appears, including Porto Talamone, the Pisans, and the Egyptian route to the Levant, where the Venetians alone had made treaties. Notes refer to Dante's Inferno, Canto x, and to Franco Sacchetti on laws against luxury.
