About this book

Stuart Farquaharson grows up in the Valley of Virginia, proud of his Confederate heritage and fond of grand speeches about chivalry. Conscience Williams has come south from Cape Cod, and she cannot resist teasing him. In the opening chapter she answers his heroic story of the Newmarket cadets with a Whittier poem about Stonewall Jackson, and he walks off in wounded dignity.

Charles Neville Buck published the novel in 1917, and it follows the two from that June afternoon into grown life. Later scenes find Stuart on a ship out of Yokohama, where a woman named Marian speaks plainly about what she once hoped and what she has since learned, while his feelings for Conscience stay fixed.

The book sets Southern tradition against New England seriousness and asks how much damage stubborn pride and weakness of will can do to people who care for each other. It suits readers who enjoy an American romance of its period.
