About this book
Cecilia: A Story of Modern Rome is by F. Marion Crawford. Chapter I shows two men sitting side by side on a stone bench in the forgotten garden of the Arcadian Society, in Rome, in early spring. To Guido d'Este, life seems miserably indifferent where it does not seem a real calamity, while to Lamberti every second of it is worth fighting for, because it is worth enjoying.
Guido murmurs, "I was envying you. You are glad to be alive." Cecilia answers quietly that it was not what Guido said but the way he said it, as if he rather regretted saying that she is always the same. Lamberti did not wish to frighten Cecilia or her mother, but sent them word that he would not leave Guido that night, nor till he was better, and that he had seen the lawyer and had recovered a number of forged papers.
