About this book

Henry Van Dyke connects these short stories through the unexplained turns of ordinary life: sudden changes of heart, choices that defy calculation, and the influence one person has on another. In his preface, a chain of lakes in Quebec becomes an image for separate tales joined by a common current. The collection alternates longer stories with brief pieces that leave room for the reader to supply their meaning.

The opening tale introduces Toinette Girard and Prosper Leclère, a French Canadian couple whose marriage brings deep affection alongside everyday faults and disappointment. Elsewhere, a doctor assists a woman who wants to remain near an old house and restore it while her husband presses to leave.
