About this book
In a moonlit bedroom, a boy thinks about a stranger's stories and the blue flower he longs to find. His dream takes him through forests and a mountain cavern to a spring, where the flower reveals a girl's face. Henry Van Dyke gives the opening tale a landscape of shifting light, moving water and natural things that seem close to speech.
The collection includes The Source, The Mill, Spy Rock and The Other Wise Man. In another scene, Luke paddles into a town whose familiar buildings conceal changes he struggles to understand. The Other Wise Man begins with Artaban's house and garden in Ecbatana, close to the walls of the royal treasury. These short stories bring dreamlike experiences and religious themes into scenes of towns, gardens and countryside. Readers drawn to symbolic fiction can follow the links between outward scenes and the characters' hopes and perceptions.
