About this book
A visitor standing before a Venetian painting needs a sense of how its maker fits into the city's wider artistic history. Evelyn March Phillipps addresses that need with an illustrated guide first published in 1912. Her account links painters to one another and follows the development of their school, from early work in Venice and Murano to figures such as Giorgione, Titian, Tiepolo and Guardi. The preface presents the volume as a framework for looking at original works and for further reading.
Comparisons with Florence introduce differences in artistic aims, while closer discussions show how an individual painter's methods change. In the pages on Titian, a visit to Rome leads into an examination of his portrait of Paul III with his nephews and his later handling of light, colour and landscape. References to paintings in major European galleries give readers specific works through which to connect the historical argument with their own observations.
