About this book

Brothers Tikhon and Kuzma Krasoff begin as travelling peddlers, carrying cheap household goods through the Russian countryside. Their family history includes a harsh landowner, a grandfather who robs churches, and a father whose small businesses fail. A fierce dispute over profits breaks the brothers apart. This novel introduces rural life through the pressures of earning a living, family conflict, and the burdens inherited from earlier generations.

Kuzma longs for education, reading and thinking about verse as his cart jolts across the steppe. Conversations with Balashkin turn into heated arguments about Russian literature, national ideals, and what learning can achieve. Around these exchanges, Bunin records the smells of shops, the heat and mud of the road, and the exhaustion of nights in unfamiliar villages. Readers interested in the relationship between intellectual ambition and daily hardship will find that tension expressed through both argument and close observation.
