About this book

Back in the Pennsylvania valley of Black Log, Mark measures his changed life against familiar roads, farms and mountains. He left home at twenty-three eager to see the world as a soldier, but a battle injury sends him back on crutches. His brother Tim carries him from the train, while the village's welcoming committee prepares its speeches. Now a schoolteacher with a small pension, Mark tells his story in the first person, balancing his longing for wider horizons with close attention to the people around him.

Nelson Lloyd fills the novel with local arguments, village pride and the awkward business of courtship. Henry Holmes and Isaac Bolum dispute dates and improvements; Perry Thomas asks Mark what gift might impress a woman, weighing pictures, statues and a geranium in a painted tin. These conversations give everyday concerns room beside the narrator's reflections on injury and confinement. Readers interested in rural American fiction will find a community revealed through its habits of speech, affectionate quarrels and modest ambitions.
