About this book
The Voice: Its Production, Care and Preservation is a book by Frank E. Miller. A note says that Dr. Frank E. Miller, the author of this book, is one of the leading New York specialists on throat, nose and ear. The text says that the apparatus concerned in voice-production is a most delicate one, and that haste in learning how to use it is not only absurd but criminal.
The text recalls the story of the famous master Porpora and his equally famous pupil Caffarelli: Porpora wrote all the feats of which the voice is capable on a single sheet of music paper, and from that one sheet Caffarelli studied with him five, some say six years. A chapter headed On Breathing: Expiration says that the act of exhaling air taken into the lungs is, for ordinary purposes, a very simple matter. The text says that the term coup de glotte conveys the idea of shock, hence creates an erroneous impression upon the mind of the singer.
