About this book
Francis E. Howard's book carries the subtitle "Treated from a Physiological and a Practical Standpoint and Especially Adapted to Schools and Boy Choirs." In a preface signed from Bridgeport, Conn., in December 1895, he says the chief difficulty for teachers of children's singing is the assumption that their voices should be treated like those of adult women, although a child's vocal organs differ in structure, strength and character.
The chapters cover the physiology of the voice, registers, how to secure good tone, the compass of the child-voice, breathing and attack, vowels, consonants and articulation, the mutation of the voice and the alto voice in male choirs. One passage objects to carrying the tones of little children three and four notes below the first line of the staff. Another says the fear that using the male falsetto, or head voice, harms the usual singing voice is unfounded.
