The text speaks directly to the reader. One passage tells a man looking for a wife to want more than a butterfly of the sunshine, and warns against women who scoff at the Christian religion. Another recommends a sitting-room with an easy chair, library books, checkerboards, guessing matches and blind man's buff, and a section headed "Christ in the Home" recalls Julius Caesar reassuring a frightened boatman. A further passage says private character is often public character turned wrong side out.
