About this book
Sermons on the Card, and Other Discourses is a book by Hugh Latimer. The introduction says Hugh Latimer, a farmer's son, was born about the year 1491, at Thurcaston, in Leicestershire. The introduction adds that he was an only son with six sisters who were all well cared for at home, and a boy of fourteen when sent to Clare College, Cambridge.
An example asks the reader to admit that it might please the king's grace to accept into his favour a man of simple degree and birth, giving him a thousand pounds in lands on the condition that he be chief captain and defender of his town of Calais. The book sets worldlings against the children of light, saying the worldlings set little by such works as God hath prepared for our salvation but extol traditions and works of their own invention. The book recalls Almighty God calling again, with the words "I will be thy God, and thy seed's after thee," speaking to Abraham.
