About this book
The Whence and the Whither of Man presents a brief history of human origin and development through conformity to environment. The discussion identifies a theory of the mutability of species as evolution, while specifying that evolution need not mean Darwinism alone. The account of practical immutability places progress in the gaps between successive forms, rather than in advances made by an individual or species.
The argument about human development insists on living for right, truth, love and duty rather than making another aim supreme. The text asks what warrant exists for believing that a special acquired characteristic can be transmitted, and gives Weismann's answer as none at all.
