The Wisdom of Father Brown

The second Father Brown collection came out in 1914, gathering twelve more stories Chesterton had been publishing in periodicals since the first volume’s success. Wisdom continues the formula but darkens it slightly. Father Brown’s adversaries are more often serious wrongdoers rather than gentleman thieves, and Chesterton seems more interested here in the social and political contexts of his cases than in the pure mystery puzzle.

Notable stories include The Absence of Mr Glass, where Brown solves a case by realizing the suspect does not actually exist. The Paradise of Thieves, set among aristocratic bandits in Italy. The Duel of Dr Hirsch, where a French scientist’s reputation is at stake. The Man in the Passage, a courtroom drama with an unusual reconstruction of how a body looked when seen from a particular angle. The collection runs lighter than Innocence on the whole, with a few of the stories feeling like extended Chestertonian essays in mystery form. Still essential for anyone working through the full Father Brown sequence.
