About this book
True Stories of History and Biography is by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The contents carry the heading The Whole History of Grandfather's Chair, with pieces called The Lady Arbella, The Pine-Tree Shillings, The Indian Bible, The Sunken Treasure, The Old-Fashioned School and The Acadian Exiles. The text says Mr. Johnson had gone, with Governor Winthrop and most of the other passengers, to Boston, where he intended to build a house for Lady Arbella and himself, and shows poor Lady Arbella feeling herself growing ill.
Grandfather says that if no dispute had arisen between the king and the people, Hutchinson would have had the character of a wise, good, and patriotic magistrate. The piece titled The Hutchinson Mob tells of a bonfire kindled in King Street on the evening of the twenty-sixth of August, 1765. Mr. Franklin says no act can possibly be for the benefit of the public generally, which involves injustice to any individual.
