About this book
The Wizard of Wall Street and His Wealth, by Trumbull White, tells “The Life and Deeds of Jay Gould.” A chapter headed Gould’s Assault upon Erie calls the ten years following the close of the war of the rebellion “the most thrilling, the most discreditable portion of Gould’s career.” A committee report quoted in the text says that, according to Mr. Gould, his operations extended into four different states and it was his custom to contribute money to influence both nominations and elections.
Mr. Gould made three stipulations about the construction of his mausoleum: that it be built as strongly and as massively as possible, that it not be pretentiously large, and that as great simplicity as possible be observed. The mausoleum is built throughout of westerly granite, thirty-three feet long, twenty-two feet wide and twenty feet high to the apex of the roof. A chapter headed Gould and the Tannery War says his career changes from the mildly humdrum life of school boy, tinker, surveyor and bookseller to an intensely dramatic period.
