About this book
Joseph Crosby Lincoln's foreword explains that a magazine story was revised and rearranged for publication as a book, and that new ideas came, grew, and developed. The foreword says readers of the former tale who perhaps imagine they know all about Seth Atkins and Mrs. Emeline Bascom will be surprised to find they really know so little.
A young fellow who is a stranger to Atkins, dressed in blue serge trousers, negligee shirt, blue socks, and without shoes or hat, has soaked garments, and salt water drips from his shoulders to the sand. The stranger asks the lightkeeper what his particular ailment was and says that his own seems to have been water on the brain. The text says the only window is a narrow affair, high up at the back, hung on hinges and fastened with a hook and staple, and that a dwarf might have squeezed through that window, but not an ex-varsity athlete like Russell Brooks.
