About this book
The Wonder Book of Volcanoes and Earthquakes is a book by Edwin J. Houston. The text tells of the brave action of the keeper of the lighthouse at Anjer, who continued at his post in order to send word to Batavia of the passing of an English steamer. The text gives a verbal account of the destruction of the port of Anjer by a Dutch pilot stationed at Anjer, who says he has lived in Anjer all his life.
The text says that when the lava solidifies the water is expelled much more energetically, and the water-vapor separates in the form of minute vesicles. The text says Atlantis, whose islands once had an extent greater than that of Libya and Asia, was afterwards sunk by an earthquake and became an impassable barrier of mud to voyagers sailing from hence to the ocean.
