About this book

On the coast of Connemara, John Castellan studies drawings for a craft capable of moving through water and rising into the air. His designs and family history introduce a science fiction novel in which inventions become part of an international struggle. The opening follows him from his room in Clifden to a meeting with an English sportsman, placing a local encounter beside the prospect of events that could affect the whole world.

Later, Lennard discusses a plan to build an enormous cannon using a deep mine shaft in Lancashire. His calculations concern a comet, while Lord Westerham's conversation brings romantic attachments and wartime loyalties into the same scene. These excerpts offer a mix of speculative engineering, astronomy, courtship and national conflict. Readers interested in early British science fiction can see how technical schemes and personal ambitions share the stage with a danger extending beyond England.
