About this book

Henrietta crosses the dangerous Lancashire sands in a postchaise with the man she hopes to marry. Behind her lies a harsh family home and the prospect of a marriage she dreads; ahead are plans to reach Scotland. While she imagines happiness, her companion fears pursuit and presses for greater intimacy. Her insistence on being placed in a landlady's care gives the opening a tension between romantic hope and practical self-respect.

Stanley John Weyman's novel places this elopement within nineteenth-century English society, combining romance with adventure. A later scene brings Bess, Thistlewood and other men into a debate about refuge, political violence and a proposal to use a child as protection for fugitives. The argument reveals divisions over what desperate people will permit in the name of their cause. Readers can expect travel hazards, uneasy loyalties and conversations that test the difference between confident speeches and moral courage.
