About this book
The Yellowstone National Park is described on its title page as historical and descriptive, illustrated with maps, views and portraits. Hiram Martin Chittenden, a Captain in the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army, begins his preface with a company of men camped at the Forks of the Madison River after the first complete tour of exploration of that region, who asked what ought to be done to preserve its wonders.
One passage describes the Sheepeaters, a people who lived on the flesh of the mountain sheep, wore skins and were armed only with bows and arrows, and it notes the Indian trails the early explorers found across the park. Another passage discusses the summer air and altitude and who should stay away, and the question of the healing value of the mineral springs. The book also carries a numbered list of magazine and book references on the park.
