About this book
A boy educated in England is called back to Venezuela as the struggle for independence draws closer to his family. His father, Barry Desmond, had found refuge there after taking part in the Irish rebellion of 1798. Nearly sixteen when the summons comes, the young narrator feels a strong loyalty to his family's home and challenges his schoolmaster's advice to remain neutral.
William Henry Giles Kingston places this adventure among the mountains, forests and broad plains of northern South America. Descriptions of tropical birds, animals and rivers share space with family history and wartime danger. A later scene follows the defence of a barricaded house under attack, bringing the narrator's convictions into immediate danger. Written for younger readers, the story offers a view of family allegiance, youthful courage and political conflict through the conventions and colonial attitudes of nineteenth-century adventure fiction.
