About this book

A bored count and his confident friend decide that seeing the world will require more than looking out of a window. Baron Stilkin urges an immediate departure, while Count Funnibos worries over neckties, slippers and the practical business of getting round the globe. Their preparations include a proposal to share a pair of seven-league boots, one boot apiece, and a visit to a busy quay in search of a ship.

William Henry Giles Kingston builds this children's adventure around the pair's conversation: literal answers, grand claims and plans that produce fresh difficulties. A later scene finds the Count wandering beside a canal before an emotional reunion with the Baron, followed by an argument over supper and missing luggage. Readers who enjoy comic travelling companions will find friendship tested by hunger, confusion and the importance both men attach to umbrellas and portmanteaus.
